Two little sun worshipers
As promised, these are the two frozen Crocus flowers from yesterday's post .... a couple of days later. At least, I'm pretty sure they are. I forgot to mark them to be certain. I'm also not exactly sure how many days later this was, as I managed to loose all the metadata. Clearly I need an assistant to take care of the details... sigh.... 05/01/21
The magic continues
The next stage in the life of the Crocus unfolds, as the leaves shrivel up after pollination and the precious seeds begin to form. 05/19/21
In storage
Seeds just waiting for spring... I think this might be goldenrod, but I'm not sure. Should have taken notes back then in the fall when I was taking the picture. Thinking of our friends dealing with the storms and the cold, hoping they are all right and the warmth will return very very quickly. 02/17/21
Spring has sprung!
On April 7, our little Prairie Crocus arrived in it's usual magical way..... popping up out of the still frozen ground, scattered around the Prairie. With the arrival of the Crocus on the ground and the geese in the air - it's definitely spring around here and so very welcome! 04/18/21
Prairie Crocus emerging
This little Crocus family shows the different stages of it's unfolding process.... they have a tough challenge, battling the overgrowth of the dead grasses from the previous year. 04/19/21
More grass
At least there's always lots of grass to entertain ..... :-)
Poking up
Found this little guy almost buried in the grass - just begging to be noticed. So, of course, I obliged.... :-)) 04/29/21
The elegance of grass
Where would we be without grass? 04/28/21
Last year's grass

Prairie Crocus soaking up the rays
One more photo of the happy Crocus family in the warm spring sunshine, and then the blizzard hit. I used to always have my scizzors handy and trim away all those bits of old growth that seemed to spoil the picture but then I realized that this was all part of the story of a wild and native plants and now I leave it as I find it. It's much more challenging to get the photo I want, but I feel it says more this way..... I hope you agree. 04/20/21
Crocus in the snow
I thought I would show you a before and after of how the Prairie Crocus manages a winter snow storm. This was taken as the snow melted and the crocus began to emerge. Tomorrow I'll show you how they looked a couple of days later. 04/30/21
Another little survivor
Only a couple more Prairie Crocus photos and then that's it for the year, lol. I know I always overdo it - it's how I celebrate spring! And it truly does seem that spring has finally sprung in Manitoba! 04/26/21
Still blooming!
Incredibly - many of the Prairie Crocus that were blooming before our latest snowstorm managed to survive... and thrive! They really never do cease to amaze! 04/25/21
The Prairie is waking up!
Many of the first flowers on the Prairie are very tiny and grow close to the earth.... always seeking the warmth of the sun. This little Dwarf Cinquefoil is so small that it's difficult to find, especially amoungst the mantle of last years grasses. 05/16/21
Two aging Prairie Crocus
Because I only photograph the Crocus when it is at it's prettiest, I thought it might be interesting to capture all of it's stages. Flowers are amazing in so many ways - it's easy to forget that their transformations may not always be beautiful, but they are always quite magical.. Once they have been pollinated, they close up and no longer open to the sun, then quickly begin to fade and loose their beautiful colours. There is such subtle beauty in aging ..... 05/18/21
The Prairie Crocus - the final chapter
The last stage of the Crocus - I hope you can see the tiny seeds beginning to fall to the ground. I could have shot much closer, so the seeds would be more evident, but the story is about so much more than just the seeds. I really do love the elegance of this final stage.... 05/20/21
