We often go for a Sunday Drive to Lockport (where you will find the best hot dogs in the land!) and a walk along the Red River. This Bridge Dam is locally called the Lockport Bridge and to be honest, I’ve never thought much about it. That’s the thing with things we’ve seen forever isn’t it? So.. I looked it up on Wiki, to share it’s history with you… and I was surprised to find out some very interesting facts that I never knew before. Here is what Wiki has to say: “The St. Andrews Caméré Curtain Bridge Dam, also known as the St. Andrews Lock and Dam, at Lockport was completed in 1910 in order to submerge the St. Andrews Rapids (a natural obstruction to the south) and make the Red River navigable through to Lake Winnipeg.[5] The dam is 270 metres (886 ft) in length and the only Caméré curtain-style dam built in North America. Movable curtains are rolled back before winter freeze-up to prevent ice jams and allow flood waters to pass through unimpeded during the spring.[6] A canal lock, the only one found in the Canadian prairies, allows river traffic to pass under the bridge.[7] The bridge above the dam, completed in 1913, connects Manitoba Highway 44 on either side of the river.[6] The St. Andrews Caméré Curtain Bridge Dam was designated a National Historic Site in 1990. A monument and recreation area are located on the west bank of the Red River near the dam.” Who knew we have the only one in North America! wow. 10/23/20
Yesterday was snowy, with heavy overcast clouds all day. I took a few photos with my iphone but it was so dark they all looked quite miserable. I played with this one to try to add a little pp (with Topaz) to jazz it up - so this is more of an impression of the day than the way it actually looked. Winter is here... I hope your world is not quite so dreary... 10/22/20
