Another teeny tiny flower that is native to the Manitoba Tall Grass Prairie. It is actually of the Amaryllis family, has long, grasslike leaves & it can grow to 20 cm tall, although they are very short on our Prairie this year, probably because of the spring burn. We’ve noticed everything is a little later and smaller… hopefully next year the Prairie will benefit more from the burn. BTW - I was not picking this pretty little being, I just wanted to show it’s small size. I didn’t realize until I looked at the photos, that an ant had also decided to help bring things into perspective.. :-) Thanks so much for all your thoughts, comments & critiques on my photos, I do so appreciate the time you spend with them! 06/25/19
This pretty little guy is another native to our Tall Grass Prairie & I have to say, notoriously difficult to photograph. I try every year & just can’t seen to nail it. It’s yellow (obviously) which is a colour I often struggle with (not sure why, just can’t seem to get clarity) and it’s surface is sort of ‘pudding-ish’ - spongy almost, so it sucks up the light and gives back very flat highlights, if any at all. But I love their cheerfulness, so I try every year. For those of you who love the science and the details :-) they are also known as Lithospermum canescens of the Boraginaceae family, flower May to July, 15 mm long flower, grow in bunches to 40 cm tall. Puccoon is an Aboriginal word for plants used in dyes. 06/24/19
