Sharp-tail Grouse, our winter guests
For the first time ever, we have had two flocks of Sharp-tail Grouse spend the winter with us, one flock of three and one of eight.
It's been such a joy to watch them scooting over the snow at break-neck speed and then they will stop, quite suddenly, and quickly sink into the snow and disappear, expertly digging a hole just big enough to bury themselves.
Their behaviour is quite comical and seems to work well for them, as we have only lost two over the winter.
I throw lots of bird seed on the snow for them and for the rabbits, it's even more comical if the rabbits show up at the same time.
I have very few photos of them - they are extremely wary and any movement in the house, and off they go. Now that the days are brighter, I've managed to shoot a few pics but they are through a window, so definitely not the best.
