Summer Heat

Our heat wave continues. Temps in the low 30’s C (90’s F) are normal in the summer here, but the humidity is not and it’s been driving the humidex up to 40C (104 F) for the last couple of weeks. And no end in sight. Sitting in the water under an umbrella is the only place to be. Seriously… I just do not know how you folks in Texas and the southern states live like this all summer! 07/06/20

The Harebell ladies

Prairie Lily

Only a few years ago, the Prairie Lily (or Western Red Lily) was prolific and scattered all over our Prairie by the dozens. This year I found this one and only 2 more. I hope that all the rain we’ve had this summer will help them recover and next year I won’t have to look so hard to find one. 08/02/20

Frosty January morning

Hummingbird bathing in the sprinkler

Yesterday I got my first shot - ever!! - of a Hummingbird! I'm quite excited about that! I think it is a female Ruby Throated Hummingbird. Please correct me if I'm wrong. It was such fun watching her, zipping back and forth through the spray from the sprinkler and then lighting on the trees for just a moment to flutter her wings, like she is doing here, and then back into the water she would go. 08/15/20

Mr. & Ms. Cedar Waxwing by janet

At least I am assuming they are a couple. I don’t think there is much difference between the male & female, so they could be a pair. We have many nesting Cedar Waxwings at the lake, but they are so shy it’s tricky to photograph them. I love how they are all about ‘family’ and are always with their flock, even tree to tree and sometimes branch to branch, they are always together. 06/26/20

We have so many Robins! Their song fills the air, expecially in the early morning and at dusk - it is truly the song of summer here on the prairies. 06/07/20

They're back!!

Yesterday morning, the tree swallows returned - it was wonderful to see them arrive! As we sat with our morning coffee, on the first warm sunny morning of the year… the sky was suddenly filled with their amazing swallow flight! Their must have been at least 20 in the air and dipping over the lake for about an hour, then they gradually disappeared leaving this pair already moving in to their last year’s home. 05/17/20

Marsh in transition (by Janet)

Yesterday we did a little road trip to Hecla Provincial Park, which is an island on the west side of Lake Winnipeg, connected to the mainland by a causeway. The big lake is still wide open water but inland, the ice is beginning to settle in. In a few days this pretty little marsh will be frozen solid.
